New Art: Bear Portrait in Colored Pencil

Growing up, one of my family’s favorite places to visit was Yosemite National Park. I remember always staring out my window as we were driving through the mountains, trying really hard not to throw up on the windy roads and distracting myself by looking for wildlife. We would almost always see some deer, tons of squirrels and maybe a coyote or two. But what we really wanted to see was a bear. Sometimes we would get lucky, and I’ll always remember how excited everyone would get, especially my dad, when we would finally spot one.

Working on this drawing, as well as my previous bear picture, has given me a whole new appreciation for this beautiful animal. This particular subject drew me in with his soulful, almost sad eyes. If only we could understand what they were thinking!
