Nature Journaling: August 2022 Highlights

I think August might be my least favorite month. It’s just so ridiculously hot that you have to wake up at an ungodly hour just to spend 5 minutes outside before bursting into flames.

Maybe I’m being a little dramatic.

I have been having to get up pretty early though to take advantage of the tolerable morning temperatures, and also to document the bird drama going down in my yard lately.

We have a new hawk that’s been hanging around, and the resident birds are not happy about it. This morning he had the audacity to perch himself on the fence right next to the bird feeder, which I noticed didn’t get a lot of visitors for quite awhile after he left.

In other yard news, the leaves on our fruitless mulberry are starting to turn–which means fall isn’t too far off….

We’ve also been getting a ton of prickly pear fruit on our cactus–time to make some jelly!

One morning I noticed that my potted cactus had bloomed, but I was short on time and told myself I’d document it the next day. Of course when I went out in the morning with my journal the flower was already withered up:( That’s what I get for waiting!

A few days later I was greeted in the morning by one of my favorite sights–a family of quail making its way through our yard!

Every year I look forward to quail sightings, and while I can usually find them when I’m out for walks, this was the first time I’d seen them visit our yard. It was a happy morning!

Preparing for the upcoming school year ended up taking over my mornings for the rest of August and I didn’t get in much more nature journaling this month. I notice that the days I take time to do it feel better than the days I don’t, so I think I need to reprioritize my day to make time for it.

How’s has your August been? Have you done any nature journaling this month?
